Candle Care Guide: How to Get the Most from Your Soy Wax Candle
A quality soy wax candle is an investment in your home environment — and like any investment, how you care for it determines the return. Follow this guide to maximize burn time, preserve fragrance, and keep your candle looking beautiful from first light to last.
Step 1: The First Burn Is Everything
The single most important thing you can do for your candle happens the very first time you light it. Soy wax has a "memory" — it will only melt as wide as it did on the first burn.
- Allow a full melt pool: Let the candle burn until the entire top layer of wax has melted edge to edge. This typically takes 2–4 hours depending on the diameter of the jar
- Never extinguish early on the first burn: If you do, the wax will tunnel down the center, wasting fragrance and shortening the life of your candle significantly
- Choose the right time: Only light your candle when you have enough time to allow a complete melt pool
Step 2: Trim Your Wick Every Time
A trimmed wick is the difference between a clean, even burn and a smoky, sooty mess.
- Trim to ¼ inch before every single burn — no exceptions
- Use a wick trimmer or small scissors; trim when the wax is cool and solid
- A properly trimmed wick produces a smaller, steadier flame that burns the wax evenly and slowly
- An untrimmed wick creates a large, flickering flame that burns too hot, consumes wax too quickly, and can blacken the jar
Step 3: Burn Smart, Burn Safe
Getting the most from your candle also means burning it correctly every session:
- Burn time per session: Keep burns between 2–4 hours. Burning longer causes the wax to overheat, which can affect fragrance throw and jar integrity
- Stop at ½ inch of wax: Never burn a candle all the way down. Leave at least ½ inch of wax at the bottom to protect the jar and the surface beneath it
- Keep away from drafts: Air movement causes uneven burning and excessive flickering — place your candle away from fans, open windows, and vents
- Burn on a flat, heat-resistant surface: Always place your candle on a stable surface away from flammable materials
- Never leave unattended: Always extinguish before leaving a room or going to sleep
Step 4: Store Your Candle Properly
Between burns, how you store your candle affects both fragrance retention and wax quality:
- Keep the lid on when not in use to protect the wax from dust and preserve the fragrance
- Store away from direct sunlight: UV light can discolor soy wax and degrade fragrance oils over time
- Avoid temperature extremes: Store at room temperature — heat can cause the wax to sweat or crack; cold can cause it to become brittle
Why Soy Wax?
Our candles are crafted with soy wax for good reasons:
- Cleaner burn: Soy wax produces significantly less soot than paraffin, keeping your air and walls cleaner
- Longer lasting: Soy burns cooler and slower than paraffin, giving you more hours per candle
- Renewable & biodegradable: Soy is a natural, plant-based ingredient — better for you and the environment
- Better fragrance throw: Soy wax holds and releases fragrance oils more evenly for a consistent scent experience
